Lessons that Develop Independent Musicians

My aim as a teacher is not simply to help students learn individual pieces, but to help them develop the skills, understanding, and confidence to continue learning and improving throughout their musical lives.

Through lessons, students develop the ability to:

  • Learn and improve independently with confidence

  • Make informed decisions about their own musical development.

  • Build transferable skills that extend beyond individual pieces.

  • Listen critically, reflect effectively, and discover appropriate solutions to musical challenges.

Beyond Learning Notes

Lessons are designed around observation, inquiry, and joint exploration. Technique, musicality, and enjoyment are not treated as separate goals; they are treated as interconnected aspects of developing a complete and expressive relationship with the instrument.

My experience as a performer provides valuable insights into areas often overlooked in traditional piano teaching, including performance preparation, stage presence, repertoire planning, transitions between pieces, and managing performance anxiety.

My perspective, informed by the Alexander Technique, allows me to consider not only the notes and sounds being produced, but the student as a whole. By developing awareness, coordination, and efficient movement, students can find greater ease, freedom, and enjoyment in their playing while building sustainable habits at the instrument.

Ways to Learn

Every student is different, and so the way we learn together should reflect that. Whether through regular one-to-one lessons, collaborative group sessions, or focused coaching, each format is built around the same philosophy: helping students develop the understanding, confidence, and independence to continue growing as musicians throughout their lives.

Individual Lessons

Regular weekly lessons provide the foundation for steady, long-term musical development. Meeting consistently allows skills to be introduced, explored, refined, and revisited over time, giving students the confidence to make meaningful progress while developing increasingly independent approaches to learning.

Lessons are individually tailored to each student’s goals, interests, and stage of development. Alongside repertoire, lessons may explore technique, musicianship, performance, listening skills, effective practice strategies, and broader musical understanding, always with the aim of helping students become more thoughtful, confident, and self-directed musicians.

Lessons are available in a range of lengths to suit different ages, levels of experience, and musical aspirations. Whether students are taking their very first steps at the piano, returning after time away, or working towards ambitious personal or performance goals, lessons are designed to support each student’s individual journey.

Group Lessons & Workshops

Learning alongside others offers opportunities that are difficult to recreate in individual lessons alone. Group sessions encourage students to learn through observation, discussion, collaboration, and shared musical experiences, thereby helping to build confidence, enhance communication, and foster musical awareness.

Workshops may explore topics such as performance preparation, ensemble playing, effective practice, musical interpretation, creative exploration, or other areas of shared interest. Above all, they provide an enjoyable environment in which students can learn from one another as well as from their teacher.

Coaching Sessions

Sometimes, as a supplement to ongoing lessons, students may need focused support for a specific challenge or goal.

Coaching sessions provide an opportunity to explore particular areas in depth, whether preparing for a performance, refining the interpretation of a piece, overcoming technical difficulties, improving practice strategies, or managing performance anxiety.

Rather than simply providing answers, coaching sessions aim to equip musicians with the skills and understanding to continue solving similar challenges independently in the future.
